For Maryland residents especially -
The SECU credit union has excess insurance coverage on their accounts. See their website at http://www.secumd.org/html/secu/lower.htm?page=about.esi for details.

Thus, if one chose to take out a cd for $200k, it seems to be fully insured.

Their list of eligibility is Maryland based, but includes several educational institutions. And "family" members of "qualifying" individuals are also eligible for membership.

Thanks for the comment and link. Some people are comfortable exceeding NCUA insurance limits, where offered. It's definitely important to check each individual credit union to see what type of insurance is available. Some are federally insured and some are not.

For more information on Excess Share insurance, you can visit this address - www.excessshare.com/public/index.cfm. Information about NCUA share insurance can be found here - www.ncua.gov/ShareInsurance/Index.htm.

This deal is DEAD at end of business today (10/19) per an SECU rep I just spoke with on the phone.

She just received notice that the offer is ending early because they've been swamped.

Thanks for the update jerryjeff. With a rate like this, I'm not surprised that they were swamped.
