It pays to check the status of each bank or CU before placing money in a term CD.
You should note that in February the Huron River Area Credit Union was placed under control of the NFCUA conservatorship:

You can check the rating of the credit union on bankrate.com, which showed this was a high rate of growth CU, indicated by the letter G after the rating (3starG/3G)

The Huron River CU was taken over at a time they were running an exceptionaly good CD rate.

U.S. New Mexico Federal Credit Union https://www.usnmfcu.org/. Is another credit union that anyone can join.
LAFCU accept everyone through an organization called LACA. Although is says on their website that you have to live in LA, I live in Florida and was able to join.

As far as Huron River Area Credit Union, they are still in operation and insured by the NCUA. Long time readers may recall that Credituniondeals.com reported on Huron River Area Credit Union being placed into conservatorship back in February when the story broke.
